Design Concept
My goal for Medea was to punctuate important moments with the absence of sound. I did so by incorporating a pulsing sound right before the continuous atmospheric sound faded out. This required an understanding of the text and what needed to be highlighted. I learned to align the soundscape with the words being spoken and by doing so, shaped the tone of the text.
Technical Challenge
I had a sneaky hidden speaker behind a wall of the set, as I had some sound effects and voiceovers that I wanted to seem like they were coming from inside a house. I struggled to make this work, and eventually realized that I needed to angle the speaker up and over the wall, so that sound wasn’t fighting to get through wood and wouldn’t bounce back and come across muffled and dead. I also sent a teensy bit of audio into my main left and main right speakers during these moments to keep the sound clear, without sacrificing the directional effect that I had created. This ended up working out extremely well.
